Encouraging people to contribute knowledge

Google started inviting a selected group of people to try a new, free tool that we are calling "knol", which stands for a unit of knowledg.

What is Knol

A knol on a particular topic is meant to be the first thing someone who searches for this topic for the first time will want to read. The goal is for knols to cover all topics, from scientific concepts, to medical information, from geographical and historical, to entertainment, from product information, to how-to-fix-it instructions

For webmasters: Whatever niches you are in, start claiming your space by creating Google Knol articles on those topics before someone else beats you to it.  If you can sneak in a reference to your site in the process, that would be even better!

For anyone: Take a look at Google Knol, maybe even do some keyword research to find what kinds of how-to topics people are searching for and write a few good articles.  Odds are you will start seeing some passive revenue for your efforts

IIS 7 new features

5. January 2010

Introduction

The IIS 7.0 configuration system is compatible with legacy configuration interfaces at the API level. It supports the Admin Base Objects (ABO) interface, also known as IMSAdminBase, as well as the ADSI and WMI providers that were built on top of ABO in IIS 6.0. Existing applications and scripts can still call into those programmatic interfaces on IIS 7.0 and continue to work, as long as the Metabase Compatibility component of IIS 7.0 is installed

This document contains:

  1. Installing Metabase Compatibility Support.

IIS 7 is the next generation of the web servers that being launched by Microsoft to integrate Windows 2008 Platform. IIS 7 Platform is fully supported with Windows Server 2008.

IIS7 is able to provide a simplified, task-based management interface, greater cross-site control, security enhancements, and integrated health management for Web Services.
With IIS 7 and .NET Framework 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, our customers are able to efficiently connect users to each other and to their data. Users are able to visualize and share data on a much higher level. IIS 7 does not have this requirement, making configuration of web applications significantly easier.

Search Engine Meta Tags Robots

1. January 2010

Google writes today to summarize several options you can use

  • NOINDEX – prevents the page from being included in the index.
  • NOFOLLOW – prevents Googlebot from following any links on the page. (Note that this is different from the link-level NOFOLLOW attribute, Googlebot from following an individual link.)
  • NOARCHIVE – prevents a cached copy of this page from being available in the search results.
  • NOSNIPPET – prevents a description from appearing below the page in the search results, as well as prevents caching of the page.
  • NOODP – blocks the Open Directory Project description of the page from being used in the description that appears below the page in the search results.
  •

    Chart

    COMMAND Ask Google Microsoft Yahoo
    NOINDEX Yes Yes Yes Yes
    NOFOLLOW Yes Yes Yes Yes
    NOARCHIVE Yes Yes Yes Yes
    NOODP No Yes Yes Yes
    NOYDIR No No No Yes
    NOSNIPPET No Yes No No
    Robot Name TEOMA GOOGLEBOT MSNBOT SLURP
    Does Robot Specific Tag Override All Robots Tag? ??? No No No

 all major search engines not to cache the page, not to use Open Directory or Yahoo Directory titles or descriptions for you page listings.

Notice that in the tag above, there are no spaces between the commands. What if I did this?

<meta name=”ROBOTS” content=”NOARCHIVE, NOODP, NOYDIR”>

Google writes today that spaces make no difference. Use them if you want or not, the tag means the same thing. Microsoft tells me the same thing, as does Yahoo.

What if you did this, with no commas:

<meta name=”ROBOTS” content=”NOARCHIVE NOODP NOYDIR”>

Microsoft tells me this is fine. I didn’t ask Yahoo about this, and Google says commas MUST be used. So use commas and don’t be a pain.

You need to have a robots tag for each particular search engine you want to target.

<meta name=”TEOMA” content=”NOINDEX”>

<meta name=”GOOGLEBOT” content=”NOARCHIVE”>

<meta name=”MSNBOT” content=”NOODP”>

<meta name=”SLURP” content=”NOFOLLOW”>

Googlebot understands any combination of lowercase and uppercase.
